NO. 08 · MARGIN CALCULATOR · BARISTAS CHOICE · FOR A CLIENT · LIVE SINCE AUGUST 2026 · AR

A café owner puts in their own menu prices and cup counts and sees what chai and matcha earn per year, with the VAT of their own country. It runs on baristaschoice.eu.

Starting point
Baristas Choice supplies chai, matcha and hojicha to cafés across Europe and wanted cafés to do the maths themselves, instead of being told.
What I built
The margin calculator on their own Shopify domain. Menu prices go in the way they sit on the board, VAT included; the tool takes the VAT off at the rate of the chosen country. I checked that rate separately for 29 European countries, because in ten of them a drink is taxed higher than the food on the same bill. Ingredient costs come from their own product pages. Alongside it I do their store work: VAT per product category and country, shelf pricing, catalogue and newsletters.
Who uses it
Cafés arriving through the newsletter or the site, and the Baristas Choice team.
Reads and writes in
Shopify (page, files, prices).
Built with
One HTML page on Shopify, no framework.
From start to live
27 August 2026, the same day.

What went wrong belongs here too: on 1 September the page turned out to load zoomed out on phones, because Shopify adds no page head with this way of hosting. Fixed by giving the page its own head. Since then I test pages like this on an emulated phone, not in a narrow browser window.
